We will be doing lots and lots of reading in first grade! I will be reading many stories aloud to the children, we will be reading lots of poetry together, and students will have time to read independently as well. Reading instruction will be provided in small guided reading groups. The children in the groups that your child will be working in will all be working on the same skills / level and instruction will be geared accordingly to your child’s needs. The children will be reading an appealing assortment of leveled books together with me in these reading groups. As the year progresses the children will be able to take some of the books we read in school home with them so that they can practice reading to you.
RTI is a framework to help schools identify and provide additional support to meet students’ specific needs. Throughout the year the children will meet in small flexible groups with a literacy tutor or classroom teacher to build specific literacy skills.
Please encourage your children to read at home. Read with them and read to them and have them read to you. We can inspire a love of reading by showing a love of reading.
Fundations lessons focus on sequenced skills that include print knowledge, alphabet awareness, phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, decoding, vocabulary, fluency and spelling.
I will be sending home a family letter at the beginning of each unit of study in Fundations. In this letter you will find the skills we are working on in the classroom as well as examples of how you can practice these skills at home. There will also be a work packet for each unit of study that your child can add to his/her Fundations folder as he/she receives it.

The children will be doing a lot of writing this year. Each child has his/her own journal which he/she will be writing in weekly. We will also be learning different forms/types of writing throughout the year (such as a friendly letter, writing to inform, persuasive writing, etc.).
